What tree removal actually costs in Sacramento

Height matters less than you'd think. Access, what's underneath, and wood weight are what really move a quote.

Crew rigging a tree section down in a Sacramento back yard

We won't put a price list on this page, because anyone who does is either guessing or planning to revise the number once they see the tree. What we can do is explain what actually drives the cost, so you can read the quotes you're given and tell whether they're comparing the same job.

Access matters more than height

The single biggest variable is how equipment gets to the tree. A 70-foot pine a crane can reach from the street can genuinely cost less than a 40-foot tree behind a house with a five-foot side gate, because the second one comes out piece by piece through the yard by hand.

What's underneath it

An open yard means sections can be dropped. A roof, a fence line, a pool, or a neighbor's greenhouse means every piece gets rigged and lowered on ropes. That's slower and it needs more crew, and it's the difference between a straightforward day and a technical one.

Wood weight and species

Oak is heavy. Palm is heavier than it looks and can't be rigged from branch structure at all. Eucalyptus is heavy, oily, and unpredictable under load. Two trees of identical height can be very different jobs depending on what they are.

Condition

Dead and decayed trees often cost more than healthy ones the same size, which surprises people. Sound wood can be climbed and rigged. Wood you can't trust means a crane or a lift, because nobody should be tied into a tree that's coming apart.

Permits

Sacramento protects certain trees by species and trunk diameter, and native oaks are frequently on that list. Where a permit is required, that's time and paperwork, and it should be stated in the quote rather than appearing later.

What should be included

  • A fixed price, not an hourly rate that grows on the day
  • Full debris haul-off — wood, brush, and the mess left behind
  • Site cleanup, raked and clear
  • Proof of license and insurance, offered without being asked
  • Stump grinding priced separately so you can choose

If a quote is materially cheaper than everyone else's, check what's missing. Usually it's haul-off, insurance, or both.
