Tree trimming in Sacramento

Not every problem tree is a removal. Crown thinning, deadwood removal, and clearance pruning keep a healthy tree standing and keep the failures from happening in the first place.

Plenty of the trees we get called out to look at don't need to come down. They need deadwood out of the canopy, weight off an over-extended limb, or clearance from a roof line. Done on a sensible cycle, that's what keeps a mature tree from becoming an emergency during the first real wind event of the season.

We prune to structure. That means removing dead, diseased, and crossing limbs, reducing end weight on the limbs most likely to fail, and opening the canopy enough for wind to pass through. We don't top trees. Topping forces weak regrowth and creates a bigger hazard two or three years out, which is a job we'd rather you never need.

Sacramento's valley oaks are the ones worth being careful with. They shed massive limbs in summer heat with no warning, and the right pruning at the right time of year is usually the difference between keeping one and losing it.

Arborist pruning a mature tree in Sacramento

What's included

What you get with tree trimming

  • Crown thinning to let wind pass through the canopy
  • Deadwood and diseased limb removal
  • End-weight reduction on over-extended limbs
  • Clearance pruning from roofs, driveways, and walkways
  • Structural pruning for young trees
  • All trimmings chipped and hauled off

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Walk the tree

We look at structure, deadwood, decay at the unions, and what the tree is growing into, then tell you what actually needs doing and what can wait.

  2. 2

    Prune to a plan

Cuts are made at the right points for the species and the season. No topping, no stubs, nothing that forces weak regrowth later.

  3. 3

    Clean and check back

Trimmings get chipped and hauled off, and we'll tell you roughly when the tree is due for another look.

Tree trimming questions

Trimming or removal — how do I know?+

Worsening lean, mushrooms or conks at the base, cracks in the trunk or a major fork, and deadwood through the upper canopy point toward removal. Most everything else is a pruning job, and we'll say so at the estimate.

When is the best time to trim?+

For most Sacramento species, late winter into early spring while the tree is dormant. Deadwood and hazard limbs can come out any time of year, and storm-damaged limbs shouldn't wait.

Do you top trees?+

No. Topping produces weak, fast regrowth and leaves you with a more dangerous tree in a few years. If a tree genuinely needs to be smaller, we reduce it properly to lateral branches instead.

How often should trees be trimmed?+

It varies by species and age, but most mature trees do well on a three to five year cycle. Younger trees benefit from more frequent structural pruning while their shape is still being set.
