Palms don't behave like the rest of Sacramento's trees. There's no branch structure to rig from, the trunk doesn't taper the way a hardwood does, and the whole weight sits at the top. Our climbers take them down in sections from the crown, dropping or lowering each piece into a controlled zone.
Most of the problem palms we get called to are Washingtonias that went unskinned for years. Sixty feet of dead frond skirt is a fire load and a home for rats, and once the crown is up in a service drop it becomes a climbing and drop-zone problem rather than a straightforward removal.
Palm root balls are dense and shallow rather than deep and spreading, so the stump comes out differently from a hardwood. We grind it out or excavate it depending on what you're planning for the spot.

The crown and skirt come off first, then the trunk in rounds, each piece lowered or dropped into a cleared zone.

Why is palm removal priced differently?+
Palm trunks are dense and heavy for their size and there's no branch structure to rig from, so the whole job is done from the crown down. Height and access drive the price more than trunk diameter does.
Can you remove just the dead fronds instead?+
Yes, skinning a palm is a much smaller job than removing it. If the palm is healthy and just neglected, we'll say so rather than sell you a removal.
Does the root ball have to come out?+
Only if you're planting, paving, or building over the spot. Palm root balls are shallow and dense, so grinding is usually straightforward.

Common with mature Washingtonias, and it changes the approach. Service drops to the house we work around directly; anything on primary lines means the utility comes first.
